2005 Mandher Devi Temple Stampede
In January 2005, hundreds of thousands of Hindus converged on the Mandher Devi temple near Wai, in India. The pilgrimage was going well until a group of pilgrims slipped on the temple’s stone steps, which were wet from the fruit given as an offering. A gas cylinder at a stall on the narrow path to the temple then exploded, causing a full blown panic. The crowd set on the stalls crowding the path, burning them down and causing more gas cylinders to explode. Poor crowd control combined with no room to move killed 291 and injured hundreds more.
