2006 Jamarat Bridge Stampede
Another massive Hajj stampede took place in 2006, on Saudi Arabia’s Jamarat Bridge, near Mecca. A busload of tourists arrived at the eastern edge of the bridge, and several people tripped trying to get out of the way of the buses. The tripping caused more people to go down, and the crowd surged west. The resulting stampede killed 346 pilgrims, and injured hundreds more. After the stampede, the Bridge was demolished and rebuilt, with wider lanes and entrances.
