1941 Chongqing Air Raid Shelter Panic
An air-raid shelter in Chongqing, China was the scene of likely the worst stampede in history, as 4,000 people were trampled during a Japanese air raid. The crowd were leaving the shelter, believing the attack was over, when the warning siren sounded again. The crush of people trying to get back in met the crush of people trying to get out, thousands died from suffocation and trampling. Others died when the shelter became blocked, and all of the air was sucked out.
