On New Years Day 1956, a crowd of over 380,000 people went to the Imperial Palace for the tradition of wishing the Emperor a happy new year. Poor crowd control led to a massive crush of people on the 20 meter wide Nijubashi Bridge, leading to the Palace. When the bridge was closed, a panic started, and people began a stampede toward the other side. 124 people were killed.
