A football match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest turned into the biggest disaster in British sports history. A massive crush of people outside the stadium turned into a stampede when an exit gate was opened, and the crowd all tried to get through it. High steel fencing around the field, designed to keep fans off the grass, turned into a barrier when the crowds crushed against them, and 94 people were killed by trampling or suffocation. Two more died later, and hundreds more were injured.
