Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme in Las Nieves, Spain

This celebration, also known as the Near-Death Festival, takes place annually in Las Nieves, Spain. With a mixture of Catholicism and pagan rites, a mass is held in honor of the patron saint of resurrection, Saint Marta de Ribarteme.

Hundreds gather on July 29th for this religious pilgrimage to show gratitude for life. Those who have actually had a near-death experience within the 12 months leading up to the festival are carried uphill to the cemetery in a coffin and then brought back down to circle the church a few times, honoring the second chance they’ve been given. After they’ve risen from their coffins, they share their experiences with the crowd.
