Night of the Radishes in Oaxaca, Mexico
Nope, not a late-night movie on the Syfy channel – it’s a real thing. Street vendors in Oaxaca, Mexico, like to show off their radish-carving skills just before Christmas. They make it a point to grow plenty of extra radishes, and much like the jack o’ lanterns of Halloween, these bulbous dirt dwellers get sculpted into some pretty elaborate things. This festival’s exact origins are unknown, but it’s believed to have started in 1897 when the city’s mayor launched the first radish art exhibit.
