Callum Lynch, played by Michael Fassbender, is a killer who the audience meets while he’s on death row, moments before he’s taken to a death chamber to be pumped full of drugs and tossed on a body pile or whatever. Fassbender¬†tries to infuse the scene with as much pathos as he can but the entire scene feels weird, and it’s far too serious for a movie about Spanish ninjas stealing a magical thing from some churched-up bad guys. The Assassin’s Creed games aren’t serious, so it’s odd that the film would lean into such a heavy scene within the first 10 minutes.
